Description

This Mason’s Select® Transparent Acrylic Concrete Stain is a penetrating stain that protects and beautifies concrete. The 100% acrylic based coating takes advantage of the unique variations in color, texture and porosity of concrete, resulting in the same multi-hued appearances found in natural stone surfaces. Transparent Acrylic Concrete Stain is formulated to resist surface stains caused by mildew, auto fluids, chemicals, hot tire pick-up, UV rays and water damage. All colors may be blended, intermixed, or tinted, to create unlimited color choices and special effects. Visit our website for a photo gallery of ideas and instructions on how to easily create designer looks.

Uses:

  • For interior and exterior concrete.

Surface Preparation:

  • The success of a coating for concrete is always dependent on the proper surface preparation of the concrete. The following steps will help you reach maximum results and longevity.

Always Start with a Clean And Dry Surface:

  • Concrete surfaces must be free of dirt, wax, grease, oil and other contaminants. Clean grease and oil with Mason’s Select® Concrete Cleaner and rinse thoroughly. New concrete must cure for at least 30 days prior to application. New or old, concrete must be dry prior to application. To test for moisture tape a 18"x18" polyethylene sheet approximately 4 mils thick over the concrete. Leave in place for 16 hours. If there is no moisture accumulated on the sheet you may proceed, if there is moisture then allow concrete to dry for several days and retest.

Always Start with a Rough Surface:

  • Use Mason’s Select® Concrete Etcher for etching (or roughening) concrete. Concrete Etcher is fast acting and easy to use. It will roughen smooth concrete and prepare the surface for staining. Simply apply Concrete Etcher, let it work for about 30 minutes, scrub and hose with water. After etching is completed, surface must be neutralized using Concrete Cleaner. Follow Concrete Cleaner instructions for neutralizing concrete surfaces. Because stains must penetrate to adhere, avoid surfaces that have been previously coated, have been treated with a release or curing agent (e.g., "tilt-up" structures), or other contaminants. Test bare concrete surface for absorption by sprinkling with water. Bare concrete surfaces that are especially smooth, non-porous or do not readily absorb water must be etched. Etching smooth concrete will allow coatings to penetrate and adhere to the concrete. Coatings can peel or be rapidly worn away from smooth concrete. It is imperative to the performance of coatings that the surface be coarse enough to allow penetration and adhesion. Concrete surfaces must be rough to the touch or have a texture as rough as 120 grit sandpaper. Concrete may be etched (roughened/profiled) using Concrete Etcher, or a floor grinder or shot blaster.

Warning:

  • Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup.

Product Preparation:

  • Stir thoroughly from bottom to top of container and occasionally during application. DO NOT SHAKE. Shaking will create excessive air in product. If shaken, allow air to escape product before application. Anti-Skid Additive may be used to create a slip resistant surface. Read and follow all label directions.

Thinning:

  • Add 1 quart of water to 1 gallon of product, stir thoroughly.

Tinting:

  • Product may be tinted using up to 2 ounces of colorant per gallon.

Test Area:

  • Always apply product to a small test area and allow to dry completely before staining entire project to ensure desired color and appearance. NOTE: Color of wet stain is much different from color when dry.

Application Method:

  • For best results apply first coat using a pump-up or airless type sprayer. NOTE: Attempting to apply the first coat solely with a brush, roller, or pad applicator may result in lap lines since the concrete may absorb the first coat faster than a brush, roller, or pad can supply wet stain. When spraying, adjust nozzle to the widest possible spray pattern. Spray stain with a broad sweeping motion until surface begins to "wet up" (get wet)  on the surface. Note that the color may not be apparent at this point, but will appear as the product dries. Do not over apply or soak concrete. Do not allow product to pool or puddle on the surface. One lightly sprayed coat is all that is necessary using this application method. If desired, a second coat may be applied after the first coat has dried for 4 hours. A second coat will result in a darker tone than the first coat and offer added protection. A second coat should be applied as a thin coat since the first coat has sealed the concrete. The second coat can be applied by brush, roller, pad applicator or pump-up sprayer. If using a pump-up or airless type sprayer, the second coat must be spread out to a smooth, even finish using a brush, roller, or pad applicator.

For Slip Resistance:

  • Use Anti-Skid Additive to create a slip resistant surface on patios, sidewalks, ramps, stairs, pool-sides and other areas that require a slip resistant surface. Just add Anti-Skid to final coat of stain or sealer and apply with a roller.

Precautions:

  • Different concrete types, textures and natural colors will affect finished tone. Cover all plants, grass, vegetation, or nearby areas. Keep container tightly closed when not in use.

Application Temperature:

  • Apply product when the temperature is above 50°F. and below 90°F. Do not apply in extreme heat of day or in direct hot sunlight. Concrete must be cool enough to allow full product penetration. Do not apply if rain is likely to occur within 24 hours.

Dry Time:

  • 1 hour to touch, 4 hours to re-coat. Allow 24 hours for foot traffic and 72 hours for vehicles/furniture. Dry time can be affected by temperature and humidity.

Coverage:

  • 150–250 sq. ft. per gallon depending on porosity of surface. If a second coat is desired, spread rate of the second coat will be approximately 250–350 sq. ft. per gallon.

Clean Up:

  • Clean brushes and equipment immediately using warm soapy water.
