How the Technology Works:

The Victor® PestChaser® is a highly effective method of controlling rats and mice. Here is the way in which the Victor® Ultrasonic PestChaser® works to repel rodents:

Non-Repetitive Sound Waves- High frequency sound waves emit a non-repetitive pattern to repel rodents and prevent them from invading your home. With over 80 oscillations per second, this electronic mouse repellent sounds like a jackhammer to mice. This type of sonic pest control is safe for humans, cats, dogs, birds, and fish. Hamsters and guinea pigs will simply need to be moved to a room without an ultrasonic rodent repellent.

This type of control is a classic animal behavior modification technique. The complex sound waves emitted by the PestChaser® do not allow rodents to habituate to the sound. These Ultrasonic devices have the ability to provide long-term reductions in rodent populations by creating a "rodent-unfriendly" environment that discourages rodent infestations.

It is important to note that ultrasonic frequencies do not travel between walls. So for the most effective rodent control, ultrasonic devices need to be placed in multiple rooms. Additionally, since sound waves are absorbed into soft surfaces, units should not be placed behind couches, curtains, or other obstructions.

The most common repellent mistake is using the devices alone to control an established infestation. Traps and rodenticides as well as sanitation and exclusion effort should be used in conjunction with ultrasonic repellents. Location, Location, Location

• First, identify a room that has signs of rodent activity. Rodents are nocturnal creatures, which mean they rarely surface during the daytime. Look for the signs of an infestation: chewing or gnaw marks, droppings, tracks and nests. Next, plug the unit into an outlet which is open to the rest of the room, not behind furniture where the sound waves may be blocked.Ultrasound is reflected by hard surfaces and absorbed by soft surfaces. In a room with mostly hard surfaces, like a kitchen, ultrasound will "bounce" around giving more effective coverage. The ideal placement would be one that allows the sound waves to cross in front of an entrance way.

Use Multiple Units

• Ultrasonic waves behave more like light than sound. For example, music from your stereo can fill your entire house. Ultrasound cannot penetrate any solid surface (walls, floors, ceilings) or travel around corners. This is why you need a unit for each room. The rule regarding square footage coverage is simple: an ultrasonic device can only cover the room in which it is installed; in a 10' x 10' room it covers 100 sq. ft., in a double car garage it covers 400 sq. ft. With obstructions, you will need to install more than one unit for maximum effectiveness.

Monitor Rodent Activity

• Monitoring the signs of rodent activity will allow you to correctly place the units in high-frequency areas and allow you to direct the unit towards their entry points. Additionally, regularly checks for the signs of recent rodent activity (fresh droppings, rodent noises, new gnaw damage) will allow you to confirm the population is dissipating. Remember, rodent populations can tolerate unfriendly changes in their environment for only a short time so you can expect to see a reduction in activity after 6 to 10 days on average.

Does the ultrasound affect animals?

• The PestChaser® emits ultrasound at varying volumes (peaking at 100dB) and varying frequencies (ranging from 32 to 62 kHz) well above the range of hearing for humans and non-rodent pets like cats, dogs, birds and fish. We do not recommend using the PestChaser® around rodent pets like gerbils, hamsters, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs and other rodent pets.

How much area does the PestChaser® cover? / Does the ultrasound penetrate through walls?

• The PestChaser® unit can only cover the room in which it is installed. The ultrasonic waves cannot penetrate walls or furniture so we recommend using multiple units per room. We recommend using the Mini PestChaser® in average sized rooms like kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms and living rooms. We recommend using the Heavy Duty and Ultra PestChaser® in large sized rooms like attics, basements, garages, etc.

 Where should I plug the PestChaser® in? / Can I plug the PestChaser® into an extension cord? / Can it be used outside?

The ideal placement would allow the ultrasound to cross in front of an entrance way. The PestChaser® can be plugged into an extension cord as long as it is placed in an open area along the wall and not near walls or furniture. The Victor® PestChaser® are recommended for indoor use only. They were designed and manufactured to be used indoors and not exposed to the elements. If this PestChaser® is used outside, the unit could potentially short out due to weather conditions, such as rain.
